Suunto Ocean & Garmin Descent Mk3

Wrist-Watch Dive Computers

Suunto Ocean and Garmin Descent Mk3 dive computers
Overview

Smartwatch for daily use, outdoor activities, training & sport — and a dive computer

Watch-style dive computers have become genuine all-day devices. The Suunto Ocean and Garmin Descent Mk3 combine normal smartwatch and sports functions with serious underwater capability, so one instrument can stay on the wrist from everyday life to the dive boat.

The two watches aim at somewhat different users: Suunto Ocean emphasizes recreational diving plus sport and outdoor use, while Garmin Descent Mk3 extends the watch format all the way into full technical and CCR diving.

Suunto Ocean

Suunto Ocean is built as a true crossover between a sports smartwatch and a recreational dive computer. It offers everyday activity tracking, wrist heart rate, GPS, outdoor navigation and more than 95 sport modes, while also providing scuba and freediving functions in the same watch.

For diving, Ocean supports single-gas and multigas modes using air or Nitrox, wireless Suunto Tank POD integration and the Suunto Bühlmann 16 GF decompression model. Suunto describes the single-gas mode as ideal for recreational no-decompression diving. Current software also allows multigas Nitrox use, but Ocean does not provide Trimix or CCR support, so it is not intended as Suunto's full technical-diving platform.

For more advanced diving: Suunto's larger Nautic line is designed as the dedicated advanced dive-computer direction, with deeper technical capabilities including current CCR support. Nautic is fundamentally a dive instrument rather than an everyday smartwatch by design.

Garmin Descent Mk3

The Descent Mk3 is one of the most complete watch-format combinations of smartwatch, outdoor computer and technical dive computer. It is expensive, but the same watch can cover daily notifications and health tracking, running and training, GPS navigation, maps and music, then switch into a full dive-computer interface.

Its dive modes include single gas, multigas, CCR, gauge and apnea. Multi-gas and CCR setup allow oxygen and helium fractions, making Trimix and decompression diving possible. Garmin uses Bühlmann ZHL-16C and supports decompression stops, gas switching and CCR setpoints.

Both watches can live on the wrist every day, but their dive focus differs. Ocean is especially attractive when recreational diving and normal smartwatch/sport use share equal priority. Descent Mk3 reaches much further into technical diving while retaining a full Garmin multisport-smartwatch platform.
