Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus
The Mini 3 Plus is designed for communication outside cellular coverage. With an active inReach plan it can send and receive text messages, exchange voice messages, support photo messaging through the Garmin Messenger app, request weather information, share tracking data and trigger an interactive SOS to the Garmin Response coordination center.
The unit is also useful even when nothing has gone wrong. A hiker can send progress updates, a traveler can keep family informed from remote areas, and a dive group can use it on a boat or shore base where mobile service is unreliable. The device has its own GPS and compass, can store waypoints and routes, and supports basic course navigation and TracBack-style return navigation. Garmin Explore adds more detailed map and route planning on the phone.
Main specifications
Messages, navigation and SOS
The small color display allows simple standalone operation for messaging and navigation. For longer typing, contact management and richer map use, the Garmin Messenger and Garmin Explore apps make operation much easier.
The SOS button sits under a protective cover. When activated with a satellite subscription, an interactive SOS sends the user's position to Garmin Response, where coordinators can exchange messages and work with local emergency resources.
Iridium subscription overview
Satellite communication features require an active Garmin inReach subscription. Garmin currently offers several consumer levels — Enabled, Essential, Standard and Premium — with increasing amounts of messaging, tracking and weather use. All active levels include SOS capability; regional prices and included message allowances can change.
Without an active subscription, the device can still be used for functions such as saving waypoints, recording activities and basic navigation, but satellite SOS, messaging, weather and transmitted tracking are unavailable.
Why it fits diving travel
The Mini 3 Plus is not an underwater communicator. Its value for diving is before and after the dive: remote ferries, liveaboards, island transfers, shore expeditions and emergency backup where there may be no LTE or Wi-Fi.
If it is physically taken underwater it should be protected in Garmin's purpose-built dive case. Satellite communication itself requires a usable view of the sky, so messaging and SOS are surface functions.
