Türkiye — Taurus karst meets Mediterranean technical diving

Türkiye combines deep submerged karst at Suluin, a caver-first sump more than a kilometre underground in Morca, major underground lakes, recreational Mediterranean caverns and a globally important underwater-heritage layer.

Classification is critical: deep cave, internal sump, show-cave lake, marine cavern and protected archaeological site are not interchangeable. Historical exploration never establishes present access.

National KCore identity — two cave-diving extremes

The Taurus carbonate belt creates deep springs, flooded caves and giant underground rivers, while the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts add marine caverns and submerged paleokarst.

Suluin is a genuine deep submerged cave near sea level. Morca is the opposite: the dive begins only after a multi-day vertical-cave expedition has reached roughly -1,259 m cave depth. Those two sites define the country's unusual range.

Suluin — Türkiye’s flagship deep submerged cave

Suluin lies near Finike in Antalya's travertine-karst belt. The large flooded entrance opens into submerged passages with stalactites, chambers and side channels, demonstrating former dry-cave development before inundation.

Finike's official local history records a team reaching 122 m on 27 August 1995 without finding the end. The same public historical material contains inconsistent details about an older fatality, so KCore preserves the depth milestone while refusing to invent a settled fatality chronology.

Suluin August 2026 — new line, experimental gases and an unresolved historical contradiction

Between 10 and 16 August 2026 an officially coordinated expedition returned to Suluin with technical divers, public institutions and rescue teams. The project reached 117 m and installed an uninterrupted guideline back to the surface.

Anadolu Ajansı also reported experimental addition of hydrogen to helium-oxygen mixtures alongside CCR trimix procedures in an effort to address high-pressure nervous syndrome risk. KCore records this strictly as a dated expedition experiment, not as general diving advice.

The public record now contains a genuine contradiction: 122 m is claimed in official 1995 history, while the 2026 team describes a new line to 117 m and previously unexplored accessible sections. Different branches, lost historical line, uncertain old depth or imprecise public reporting are all possible; none should be asserted without primary records.

Until the 1995 dive log and the 2026 survey are directly compared, publish both figures with their dates and state that the discrepancy remains unresolved.

Morca — the cave dive begins at roughly -1,259 m

Morca Düdeni on the Taşeli Plateau reached about -1,276 m and more than five kilometres of passage during the major 2020 exploration. Most of the cave is vertical dry-cave expedition terrain.

In 2020 Hakan Eğilmez dived the main-branch sump at approximately -1,259 m cave depth. Published congress material gives roughly 25 m of submerged penetration and another 7-8 m of underwater descent, with water around 3-4°C and clear visibility reported in contemporary accounts.

The epiphreatic labyrinth also contains multiple active sumps, so the underwater frontier is a network rather than one terminal pool.

Morca 2023 and the national cave-rescue layer

In September 2023 American caver Mark Dickey became seriously ill during an international Morca expedition. Türkiye Mağaracılık Federasyonu, AFAD, UMKE, ECRA and teams from several countries coordinated an approximately nine-day extraction from a camp around -1,040 m.

The rescue was not a cave-diving rescue, but it is directly relevant to future sump diving: any underwater casualty near Morca's deepest sumps would be layered on top of one of the most difficult vertical-cave evacuation environments on Earth.

The 2026 Suluin project also included confined-environment rescue coordination, showing underwater capability developing alongside Türkiye's mature dry-cave rescue system.

Türkiye · research catalogue

Altınbeşik and Gilindire — major water caves, not public cave-diving routes

Altınbeşik is a roughly 2.2 km multi-level underground-river cave whose public access is by managed boat visit. It is a major hydrological system, but the current source set does not justify advertising it as a routine scuba-cave site.

Gilindire / Aynalıgöl is a 555 m coastal cave with a rear lake roughly 140 m long and as deep as about 47 m. Drowned speleothems and brackish-to-saline stratification make it a valuable paleoclimate and sea-level archive. It is a protected nature-reserve/show-cave environment, not a tourism-first dive site.

Türkiye · research catalogue

Kaş, Marmaris and the marine-cavern layer

Kaş Blue Cave is one of the cleanest classification examples in the catalogue: current operator material places it in roughly the 5-18 m range and explicitly calls it a guided cavern dive, not technical cave diving.

Kaş Canyon contains short site-specific cave/tunnel sectors, while Marmaris Baca Mağarası / Chimney Cave is a recreational marine cave with daylight channelled through chimney geometry.

Older regional documentation also describes a Demre coastal cave cluster with galleries and air pockets. Because the source is older, current access and operator status should be reverified before visitor-facing publication.

Underwater archaeology — heritage law overlays the coast

Türkiye's Mediterranean coast contains an exceptionally rich underwater archaeological landscape of wrecks, harbours and submerged settlements. Law No. 2863 and implementing regulations protect underwater cultural property and can restrict sporting diving in designated zones.

Kekova is included as a classification example: it is a submerged archaeological landscape, not a cave. A physical underwater structure is not automatically an overhead-diving recommendation.

Türkiye · research catalogue

Training and regulation

Türkiye Sualtı Sporları Federasyonu regulates sporting scuba and authorized dive centres nationally. The country has a large recreational and technical-diving base, especially on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts.

This research pass did not verify a broad public Full Cave schoolhouse comparable with Mexico, Florida or Hungary. Specialist cave-diving capacity is better evidenced by Suluin, Morca and individual technical/cave instructors than by a dense national cave-training network.

Access, protection and artificial overhead

Suluin requires special permission and was explored in 2026 under explicit official coordination. Morca is an expedition speleological environment. Altınbeşik and Gilindire are managed/protected caves. Marine cavern diving operates through licensed local centres and site rules.

Türkiye has extensive mining, quarry, military and industrial history, but this research pass did not verify a mature legal sporting flooded-mine scene. Quarry lakes remain open water unless submerged galleries are actually documented; speculative military/tunnel access should not be published.

Türkiye · research catalogue

Discovery frontiers

Suluin: reconcile the 1995 122 m history with the 2026 117 m line and continue beyond the modern endpoint if legally approved.
Morca: the main sump remains open after the short 2020 penetration; labyrinth branches add several more underwater leads.
Taşeli Plateau: one of Türkiye's largest deep-karst drainage questions.
Kırkgöz / Antalya aquifer: deep flooded paleokarst beneath a major coastal freshwater system.
Western Taurus: active underground rivers may conceal further caver-first sumps.
Mediterranean drowned caves: likely important as geological archives even where they never become dive attractions.

Türkiye · research catalogue

Selected source backbone

Finike District Governorship / municipality historical material; Anadolu Ajansı 25 August 2026 Suluin expedition reporting; Western Mediterranean regional diving guides; 18th International Congress of Speleology and EuroSpeleo reporting on Morca; Türkiye Mağaracılık Federasyonu and ECRA on the 2023 rescue; GoTürkiye / ministry material on Altınbeşik and Gilindire; Law No. 2863 and underwater-protection regulations; current Kaş and Marmaris operator material; TSSF current equipped-diving regulation.

Publication rule: keep deep cave, internal sump, underground lake, marine cavern and underwater heritage separate. Publish both Suluin depth claims until primary records reconcile them, distinguish Morca cave depth from dive penetration, and do not invent flooded-mine diving or public access from historical reports.
