National identity - several Swiss cave-diving cultures

Switzerland combines deep western resurgences, central lake-edge spring caves, Ticino post-siphon systems and giant alpine cave networks where diving may be only one stage of a much larger speleological project. It is both a genuine cave-diving destination and a caver-first exploration country.

Training caves, extreme deep resurgences and post-siphon dry-cave projects remain distinct categories throughout this page.

Source de l’Orbe / Vallorbe - the classic Jura resurgence

The Source de l’Orbe is among Switzerland’s oldest documented cave-diving targets. Dye tracing linked the Joux/Brenet basin to the resurgence, and in 1893 a diver in heavy equipment reached roughly -11 m. Modern scuba exploration resumed in the 1960s.

The flooded source is directly connected to the Grottes de Vallorbe show cave. Flow can vary from about 2 m³/s at low water to around 80 m³/s in floods. In 2026 Swiss Cave Diving reported HT1 training in the Orbe and renewed mainline work through its research commission.

Chaudanne - Switzerland’s deep-resurgence laboratory

Exploration developed from 1960s work through the GLPS era to the deep pushes of Cyrille Brandt and Olivier Isler. Brandt reached -143 m in 1988; Michael Walz reached -175 m in 2009 during a 9 h 13 min dive.

Chaudanne is a narrow, hydrologically active resurgence with strong flow variation and 8-9°C water. It is an exploration and research cave rather than a routine training environment.

Bätterich - deep cave diving from Lake Thun

The Bätterich source emerges underwater from Lake Thun. Published maps show roughly 500 m of development and about 82 m depth. The cave’s repeated descents and ascents complicate gas and decompression planning, while strong discharge can make the entrance unsafe.

On 14 October 2012 a 73-year-old diver became separated from her buddy and was later recovered about 80 m inside by a specialist cave diver brought in by Rega. The history is recorded factually and without sensationalism.

Bärenschacht - a short sump that opened tens of kilometres

In 1986 Beat Brunold passed the extremely tight terminal sump around 586 m below the entrance. Beyond lay a vast phreatic base-level system. Because repeated sump commuting was too difficult and dangerous, an approximately 40 m bypass tunnel was completed in 1995.

The system later grew beyond 60 km, with project sources above 68 km. It is a defining example of diving as a speleological tool: the dive removed a barrier so dry-cave exploration could continue.

Sorgente Bossi - Ticino’s deep post-siphon expedition cave

The main siphon descends to -89 m. In 1985 Olivier Isler and Walter Keusen passed the deep restriction and opened dry cave beyond. Later work combined deep diving, transport tubes, rope work, climbing, survey and additional sumps.

The Municipality of Arogno now reports six siphons and more than 3,000 m of development, still unfinished. Diving is formally managed through authorization/key procedures and current qualification, insurance and emergency-plan requirements.
