Portugal

Portugal has a surprisingly strong and technically demanding cave-diving landscape. The central limestone massifs contain long active karst systems such as Almonda, deep resurgences such as Alviela, and multi-sump projects in the Mira-Minde polje. The Azores add an entirely different overhead environment: volcanic lava tubes, arches and sea caves formed where lava met the Atlantic.

Alviela spring cave

Length: 1,000 m+ published penetration

Depth: -135 m historic; exploration beyond -200 m; -212 m claimed in 2021

KCore note: Dry-season only because winter flow can make entry impossible; one of Portugal’s deepest active cave-diving projects.

Moinhos Velhos - Pena - Contenda system

Gruta Funda

Flooded mines, quarries and artificial overhead environments

This research pass did not verify a major managed public flooded-mine penetration site comparable to Hraničná, Olgiate Molgora or the Slovak Opal Mines. KCore keeps the industrial category open but does not label a flooded working as a dive site without a current legal access pathway.

Where cave-diving training is available today

Portugal supports formal cave training at national level. CMAS Portugal lists Cave Diver, Full Cave Diver and Overhead Environment Scooter programmes. GUE documented the first Cave 1 classes held in Portugal at Alviela, and Portugal-based specialist cave instructors advertise training and exploration in national systems.

Discovery frontiers - where Portugal may still surprise us

Almonda - Serra de Aire / Arrife

Context: The network exceeds 12-15 km depending on survey scope and remains incompletely documented. Two underground rivers converge at the spring.

Potential: New underwater continuations, links between active/fossil levels, additional entrances, archaeological finds and fuller integration of north/west river branches.

Discovery year: 20?? - half a million years of human history above a cave that still is not finished.

Alviela deep system

Context: Exploration progressed from -135 m to reports beyond -200 m, including a 2021 dive claimed to -212 m at roughly 1.5 km penetration.

Potential: Deeper continuation, side windows, new upstream branches and physical links in the Alviela-Minde-Almonda karst triangle.

Discovery year: 20?? - one of Portugal’s clearest deep-cave frontiers.

Mira-Minde polje / Moinhos Velhos-Contenda-Pena

Context: The 2023 physical connection proved that long-suspected hydrological relationships can still become human traverses.

Potential: Additional submerged connections, lower active levels and links with Pena and Mindinho/Mira sectors.

Discovery year: 20?? - 2023 already proved the map can still change.

Olho de Mira / Mindinho

Context: The spring responds dramatically to polje water levels and already offers hundreds of metres of submerged development.

Potential: Upstream collector passages, deeper low-water exploration and links to neighbouring Minde-polje caves.

Discovery year: 20?? - the exploration window moves with the water table.

Maciço de Sicó

Context: Anços proves substantial submerged development in a massif containing numerous sinks, caves and resurgences.

Potential: Longer resurgence systems, sink-spring connections and new deep phreatic routes.

Discovery year: 20?? - Sicó is quieter than Aire, not necessarily simpler.

Algarve Barrocal karst

Context: The Algarvensis Geopark describes a complex cave landscape with important cave biodiversity.

Potential: New groundwater conduits and small anchialine/karst habitats; discoveries may be biological rather than giant dive tunnels.

Discovery year: 20?? - the next great discovery may fit in a sample vial.

Azores submarine lava tubes

Context: Official dive sources document caves, lava tubes and linked chambers across several islands.

Potential: New submerged tube continuations, linked chambers, biology and volcanic-geomorphology mapping.

Discovery year: 20?? - young islands, young caves, plenty left underwater.

Estremoz-Cano / Alentejo carbonate karst

Context: Algar das Morenas proves phreatic cave development in a carbonate massif better known for marble and mining.

Potential: Deeper shafts, additional phreatic cavities and intersections between natural karst and historic extraction zones.

Discovery year: 20?? - where karst and mining geology overlap, surprises are likely.

Local culture - what makes Portuguese cave diving distinctive

Portugal’s freshwater cave-diving community is relatively small, so exploration has a strongly project-based character. Divers often work inside broader speleological, archaeological or hydrological programmes rather than simply visiting a famous permanent-line system. Seasonal water levels are decisive: the same cave may be undiveable in winter, directly accessible during high water, or require a long dry-cave approach later.

The Azores add an entirely different culture: volcanic geology makes arches, caves and lava corridors part of normal island diving. Portugal therefore demonstrates beautifully that “overhead diving” is not one geology or one style of diving.
