New Zealand — caver first, diver when the cave says so

Aotearoa New Zealand is a world-class caving country whose submerged systems are far less commercialised than Mexico or Florida. Its cave-diving culture grew from dry cavers pushing sumps, local explorers opening resurgences and international technical teams attacking extreme-depth sites.

Cave and spring access must be treated as part of land management, conservation and mana whenua relationships. Public access to a resurgence never implies permission to dive it.

National KCore identity — caver first, diver when the cave says so

New Zealand’s submerged-cave tradition is much closer to British sump culture than to destination cave tourism. Important dives may begin only after long carries, rope work, stream passage or alpine logistics; a diver can cross a sump, walk dry cave and then dive again.

The principal karst provinces are Waitomo, north-west Nelson/Tasman and Kahurangi, Buller/Charleston and the West Coast, with smaller limestone belts elsewhere. The scale of dry cave matters because groundwater routes create the underwater frontiers.

Pearse Resurgence — the extreme-depth flagship

Pearse drains the Arthur Range marble karst in Kahurangi National Park and has been pushed incrementally since the 1970s. Dave Apperley and Rick Stanton extended it to about 177 m in 2007; later Wet Mules work led by Richard Harris and Craig Challen explored separate deep leads to roughly 229 m and 245 m.

Typical water temperature is only 6–7°C. Modern dives have used CCRs, deep mixed gases, decompression habitats, heated systems, underwater communications and long support chains. Later projects also investigated hydrogen-containing breathing gas in the context of extreme depth and HPNS research.

Pearse is also a science site: groundwater work identified previously undescribed stygofauna, making it simultaneously an exploration, diving-medicine and subterranean-biology project.

Pearse 1995 — tragedy and transition

Dave Weaver died during deep exploration at Pearse in May 1995. His body remained in the cave for roughly eighteen months and was recovered in January 1997 by David Apperley and Richard Taylor from the mid-80 m depth range.

The accident belongs to the transition from deep air practices toward mixed gas, rebreathers, decompression habitats and formal expedition support. Recovery and further exploration became closely intertwined at the site.

Riuwaka — a classic multi-sump expedition

Te Puna Wai o Riuwaka is a genuine multi-sump system rather than a single underwater tunnel. Club descriptions report more than ten sumps, while much of an expedition is spent walking, scrambling and moving equipment through boulders and rapids.

The resurgence is also culturally significant and recognised as wāhi tapu by Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Rārua and Ngāti Tama. Underwater exploration therefore sits inside a cultural and land-management relationship, not just a diver-access problem.

Waitomo, West Coast and internal sump culture

Waitomo is famous for glowworm tourism but has long been a domestic sump-diving laboratory. Kieran McKay and other explorers used sump diving to connect previously separate dry passages, demonstrating how short underwater barriers can materially expand a cave map.

Around Charleston and the Nile River, current projects combine dry caving and sump diving; recent work added roughly 600 m of new cave at depths to about 37 m. West Coast rainfall frequently becomes the limiting factor.

Bulmer Cavern’s internal sumps and the dye-traced relation toward Blue Creek illustrate why a relatively short underwater lead can be strategically important inside a 74 km-class dry cave.

Te Waikoropupū, Māori values and conservation

Te Waikoropupū was once a famous clear-water dive site. That era is over: current DOC rules prohibit diving, swimming, wading, boating or equipment contact with the spring, Fish Creek and Springs River.

The closure protects exceptional water clarity and groundwater quality while recognising the spring as taonga and wāhi tapu. KCore therefore treats it as a conservation and hydrological frontier, not a historical site whose former dive access can be revived by implication.

NZSS minimum-impact principles similarly emphasize permission, no disturbance of biological or archaeological material and restraint in publishing sensitive cave coordinates.

Marine overhead — Poor Knights and Northland

The Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve contains a dense volcanic landscape of caves, arches and tunnels, including Rikoriko Cave and several named arches. These are established marine-overhead dive environments, not groundwater cave systems.

Smaller Northland sea caves have also been used historically for cavern/intro-cave teaching and exploration. Their access and condition are local and dynamic, so they remain a separate marine classification.

Training, local culture and rescue

Formal cavern/cave training exists in New Zealand, but the country remains exploration-led rather than a mass course destination. Historically, limited local training meant some sump divers trained overseas or developed through the caving community before formal certification.

NZ Cave Search and Rescue operates through NZSS with LandSAR, Police and NZSAR. A 2019 Spitalls System exercise was reported as the first New Zealand Cave Diving SAREX, and larger deep-cave exercises continue to demonstrate mature subterranean rescue capability.
