Japan — fragmented geography, serious underwater karst

Japan has no single dominant cave-diving province. Instead, Oita and Yamaguchi contain limestone aquifers and submerged research caves, Iwate contains deep underground lakes, and Okinawa, Kumejima, Tokunoshima and the Daito Islands add anchialine and submarine limestone systems.

True cave diving is comparatively specialized. Many important systems are protected, privately managed or research-only, while tourist marine caverns must be kept separate from long-penetration cave systems.

Current management, landowner and cultural-property rules override historic exploration. Unbuki is explicitly no-diving; Chosei Coal Mine is a memorial/research site with diving suspended after the 2026 fatality.

National KCore identity

Japan’s underwater-cave map is geographically fragmented but scientifically rich. Inazumi provides the strongest managed natural-cave example; Ryusendo and Akiyoshidai are research-led; the Ryukyu islands add anchialine and submarine systems; and Chosei shows a rare industrial-overhead layer.

The Japanese Speleological Society has long emphasized that easily accessible cave-training sites are uncommon and that sump work often demands ordinary caving competence first.

Inazumi — Japan’s longest verified underwater limestone cave

Inazumi Suichu Shonyudo in Bungo-Ono is the cornerstone of Japanese cave diving. Organized underwater investigation began in 1976 under Ko Shiozuki and others. Later tourist development exposed dry sections while substantial submerged cave remained.

Modern projects place the known underwater system beyond one kilometre, with depths around 44-46 m. A renewed 2024-26 project integrates exploration, survey, conservation, photography and team development. Participation is managed and project-specific rather than unrestricted public penetration.

Unbuki — anchialine cave, archaeology and an unresolved sea connection

Unbuki on Tokunoshima is an inland anchialine pool that responds to tides and extends beneath the coastline. Expert-diver survey work beginning in 2018 reached about 700 m from the entrance, while local material describes roughly one kilometre of total cave.

Prehistoric pottery and unusual cave fauna were documented. The sea opening remains unfound. Official tourism material states that diving is prohibited, so KCore treats Unbuki as a protected research environment, not a visitor dive.

Ryusendo — deep underground lakes as a scientific laboratory

Ryusendo is a nationally protected natural monument with roughly 4.1 km documented and eight known underground lakes. Kenichiro Ochi discovered the second lake by diving in 1962; the third followed through diving in 1967.

The public third lake is about 98 m deep, while a deeper non-public lake is reported around 120 m. Diving remains scientific and survey-oriented rather than recreational.

Akiyoshidai — a revived national underwater-karst frontier

Akiyoshidai is Japan’s largest major karst plateau. In February 2026 DIVE Explorers / JKUEP began a new underwater-cave programme in coordination with Mine City Akiyoshidai Science Museum, landowners and cultural-property authorities.

Several candidate sites retain maps from roughly forty years ago; Shiramizu-no-Ike had already been mapped to about 300 m. Modern planning states that large parts beyond roughly 250 m and most deeper zones remain unexplored. Rescue training is being built into the project culture.

Okinawa and Kumejima — tourist caverns beside genuine technical caves

Okinawa’s Blue Cave and Manza Dream Hole are popular marine-cavern environments and should not be confused with full cave systems. Hirobe Gama is the serious counterpart, with a historical total around 620-680 m.

Hidenchi Gama off Kumejima begins around 38 m and averages more than 35 m depth, making decompression unavoidable on meaningful penetrations. More than 400 m of cave are reported, along with major submerged speleothems and unusual submarine-cave fauna.

South Daito — dozens of almost untouched subterranean lakes

Systematic work since 2023 has checked nearly one hundred dolines/caves and dived more than twenty subterranean lakes with local and landowner permission. Typical water surfaces lie 15-20 m below ground, underwater depth is often around 18 m, and weak flow creates extraordinary clarity but severe silt persistence.

The White Cave and Black Cave are two provisional major systems. Current interpretation suggests many chambers may be relatively isolated, making hydrogeology and biology as important as distance records.

Chosei Coal Mine — memorial diving, not recreation

Chosei Coal Mine was flooded in 1942, killing 183 miners. From 2024 volunteer technical divers supported a memorial/remains-recovery project, and human remains were recovered in 2025.

On 7 February 2026 Taiwanese volunteer diver Xu Wei died during a survey. The project subsequently suspended diving and announced no resumption before February 2027. KCore therefore classifies Chosei strictly as memorial/research industrial overhead.

Training and Japanese cave-diving culture

Modern Japanese technical operators now offer cave courses and managed dives in Oita and selected Ryukyu systems. This is a recent structured layer built on much older exploration: Ryusendo in the 1960s, Inazumi in the 1970s and historic Akiyoshidai survey work decades before modern commercial cave training.

Biology, archaeology, access and protection

Japanese submerged caves are important isolated biological habitats. Okinawan and Kumejima submarine caves have produced newly described cave fauna, while Unbuki combines archaeology with anchialine biology and South Daito is actively sampled for potentially undescribed organisms.

Access is highly site-specific: natural-monument protection, cultural-property status, private land, village water use and project management all matter. Public visibility of an entrance does not imply diving rights.
