Italy

Italy is one of Europe's most diverse cave-diving countries. The north contains extremely deep vauclusian springs and alpine karst systems; Sardinia contains kilometre-scale coastal and inland submerged networks; the south contains anchialine caves, marine caverns and deep terminal sumps reached only after long dry-cave descents. Italy also has a genuine modern mine-diving training site at Olgiate Molgora and a long culture of technical speleo-diving, rescue and scientific exploration.

NATURAL CAVE / SIPHON: Natural submerged passage, spring, sump, marine cave or underground river.

RESEARCH / PERMIT: Protected or managed cave where access is tied to authorisation, local rules or scientific/speleological work.

REGULATED DIVING: Diving is possible but requires prior notification, booking or formal authorisation.

EXTREME / EXPLORATION: Depth, current, logistics or remoteness place the site beyond ordinary cave-diving tourism.

FLOODED MINE / TRUE OVERHEAD: Man-made submerged galleries/levels with no direct ascent.

FLOODED QUARRY / OPEN WATER: Artificial extraction lake; not automatically an overhead environment.

EXPLORATION FRONTIER: Known system remains physically, hydrologically or depth-wise unresolved.

Italy in cave-diving history

Italian speleo-diving grew from both alpine speleology and Mediterranean coastal exploration. Northern teams worked deep springs in Friuli and Veneto; Sardinia developed an international expedition culture around the Supramonte and Gulf of Orosei; southern teams explored terminal lakes and anchialine systems in Puglia and Campania. The CNSAS created its national speleo-scuba commission in 1984, developing specialised rescue methods for natural and artificial flooded underground environments.

The modern record continues to move. In February 2026 Bartłomiej Pitała extended Elefante Bianco to -292 m, while in Friuli Daniele Ceschin crossed the terminal siphons of Risorgiva di Eolo and opened roughly 300 m of new dry and semi-flooded passage.

KCore note: Earlier Gruppo Sommozzatori Almè work documented thousands of metres of line and extensive survey.

Most Italian flooded mines remain legally closed or accessible only through recognised speleological structures; Olgiate Molgora is the major verified exception. KCore does not list other flooded workings as dive sites without a current owner/operator or formal permission pathway.

Discovery frontiers - where Italy may still surprise us

Cansiglio-Cavallo / Livenza springs - Friuli

Context: Gorgazzo, Santissima and Molinetto drain a highly karstified massif; underground infiltration routes remain partly unknown.

Potential: Deeper Gorgazzo continuation, side branches, physical connections between major Livenza springs and new access points from the plateau.

Discovery year: 20?? - the water knows the route through Cansiglio; we still do not.

Brenta / Asiago karst - Veneto

Context: Elefante Bianco reached -292 m in 2026, while Oliero and Fontanazzi form another major resurgence complex.

Potential: Elefante continuation below -292 m, new deep branches, hydrological links among Subiolo-Oliero-Fontanazzi and dry caves above.

Discovery year: 20?? - after 2026, nobody should call this system finished.

Risorgiva di Eolo / Monte Cuâr - Friuli

Context: After the 2026 sump breakthrough, the new passage still continues and teams are searching for a high entrance on Monte Cuâr.

Potential: Additional kilometres, a high-level entrance, more terminal sumps and a complete hydrological model.

Discovery year: 2026+ - this frontier is active right now.

Supramonte di Oliena - Sardinia

Context: Su Gologone, Su Bentu, Sa Oche, Su Guanu and other caves belong to a vast karst aquifer with unresolved deep drainage.

Potential: Deeper Su Gologone, submerged links among known systems, new collectors and post-sump passage.

Discovery year: 20?? - Sardinia has enough limestone to keep several generations busy.

Gulf of Orosei / Baunei-Dorgali - Sardinia

Context: Bue Marino, Bel Torrente, Su Molente, Monte Longos and coastal resurgences already form kilometre-scale systems.

Potential: System connections, new submarine entrances, bypasses and extensions of the Codula collectors.

Discovery year: 20?? - one of Europe’s strongest candidates for major new submerged connections.

Monti Alburni - Campania

Context: Deep dry caves terminate in sumps hundreds of metres below the surface.

Potential: Post-sump dry cave, deeper collectors and links between major Alburni systems.

Discovery year: 20?? - but first carry the tanks down a mountain.

Murge / Salento / Gargano - Puglia

Context: Puglia contains deep vertical caves, anchialine systems, coastal sinkholes and marine caves.

Potential: Deeper groundwater continuations, anchialine networks and unexplored marine/karst junctions.

Discovery year: 20?? - biology may be as important as distance here.

Alpi Apuane / Tuscany

Context: Italy’s deepest dry caves lie in intensely karstified marble massifs where terminal water and resurgences remain important hydrological questions.

Potential: Deep sump collectors, links between high alpine systems and major springs, scientifically driven mine/cave investigations.

Discovery year: 20?? - probably with very muddy equipment.

Local culture - what makes Italy special

Italy does not have a single cave-diving culture. Friuli and Veneto are dominated by cold deep springs and alpine hydrology; Sardinia has a true international expedition culture with coastal access, boats, scooters and multi-day underground projects; Puglia combines scientific anchialine biology with marine caverns; Campania offers classic dry-cave-to-sump expeditions.

Italian speleo-diving also has a strong institutional safety culture. The CNSAS Speleo-Scuba Commission has existed since 1984 and trains for rescue in both natural and artificial flooded underground sites.

KCore editorial principle: record the headline depths, but also the teams who carried, surveyed, secured access, managed lines, ran decompression support and returned year after year.
