National KCore identity - thermal cave capital, caver-first sumps and industrial overhead

Hungary combines a warm urban hypogenic cave, a large industrial cellar/mine labyrinth, protected spring caves, thermal research sites and classic dry-cave-to-sump expeditions. The modern Budapest training scene is important, but it sits on top of an organised underwater-speleology tradition dating back decades.

Classification matters: natural cave, natural cave exposed by mining, true flooded industrial overhead and open quarry lakes are not interchangeable categories.

Molnár János - the warm cave beneath Budapest

Molnár János Cave lies beside the Lukács thermal-bath district and is an active hypogenic phreatic cave formed largely by mixing corrosion. Pharmacist János Molnár investigated the dry cave and springs in the 19th century and suspected a larger submerged system.

SCUBA-era attempts began in 1954 with Hubert Kessler, Attila Chambre and Ödön Rádai using borrowed Dräger equipment. FTSK Delfin later mapped more than 400 m of the old cave. A 2002 breakthrough opened enormous new rooms; the known system now exceeds 6 km and remains under active exploration.

Published depth figures vary by project and date, with deep sectors described in roughly the 80-100 m range. KCore therefore dates or qualifies depth metrics instead of treating one number as permanent.

Molnár János today - training, visitor diving and exploration

The licensed Molnár János Cave Diving Center opened in 2015. Current information describes year-round water around 20-28°C, clear conditions and generally slow flow. Qualified cave divers can arrange guided dives, while formal training and carefully controlled introductory experiences operate under current site rules.

Budapest now hosts cave programmes from several international training systems, including advanced and CCR cave activity. This makes Hungary unusual in Europe: major natural cave, training infrastructure, gas/logistics support and active urban karst science coexist in the capital.

Kőbánya - Budapest’s artificial-overhead counterpart

Kőbánya is a vast man-made limestone-quarry and cellar complex beneath Budapest’s 10th district, later reused for wine, brewing and wartime industry. Specialist descriptions place the greater underground labyrinth above 30 km and around 180,000 m².

Groundwater flooded lower areas. Current dive sources describe four zones, typically 10-12°C, with three fully submerged overhead sectors and one zone containing a direct-ascent/open-water area. The deepest current dive zone is about 36 m.

Kőbánya is FLOODED INDUSTRIAL / ARTIFICIAL OVERHEAD — not a natural cave and not merely an open quarry.

Kossuth Cave and the 2022 Márton Mede recovery

Kossuth Cave lies behind the Nagy-Tohonya spring in the Aggtelek Karst. Its Reménytelen (“Hopeless”) Sump became the main underwater frontier, reached through a wider speleological expedition with dry cave, stream passage and equipment transport.

On 3 April 2022 explorer Márton Mede failed to return from work near the third-sump endpoint. Search divers encountered evidence of a fresh underwater collapse. His body was located about 250 m from the start of the dive at roughly 30 m depth. The seven-day operation involved about 20 organisations and more than 250 participants and became the longest rescue/recovery operation in Hungarian Cave Rescue Service history.

Rákóczi Cave - natural cave, mining access and the 118-hour rescue

Rákóczi Cave No. 1 is a natural karst cave intersected by mining tunnels at Esztramos. In January 2002, 26-year-old diver Zsolt Szilágyi became separated in severely disturbed visibility, lost the guideline and reached a previously unknown air pocket.

Search divers found him after three days. Medical assessment ruled out returning him through the underwater route, so rescuers drove an approximately 11 m rescue tunnel from outside. Szilágyi returned to the surface after 118 hours underground and later became a caver and international GUE instructor.

Hungarian underwater speleology - organised surprisingly early

A 1977 special issue of Karszt és Barlang documented three active underwater-speleology organisations — Amphora, Delfin and Nautilus — and a Commission on Subaquatic Speleology formed within the Hungarian Speleological Society in 1975.

Amphora worked at Beremend, Kossuth and Hévíz; Delfin at Molnár János and Esztramos/Rákóczi; Nautilus at Tapolca and Baradla Lower Cave. This establishes cave diving as an organised research discipline in Hungary long before the modern visitor-training era.

Open-water quarry and bányató culture - relevant, but not overhead

Rudabánya, Palatinus/Dorog, Gyékényes and the Lupa lakes belong to Hungary’s inland-diving culture. They are useful for training, technical practice and club life, but KCore does not inflate them into cave or mine-overhead sites without verified submerged galleries.
