National identity - Dinaric speleodiving from deep springs to vrulje

Croatia sits on the Dinaric Karst and combines deep vauclusian springs, kilometre-scale submarine freshwater caves, terminal sumps at the bottoms of kilometre-deep pits, giant collapse dolines and a broad layer of drowned Adriatic paleokarst.

The national tradition is strongly caver-first: rope work, underground camps, survey, biospeleology, hydrology and sump diving often belong to one expedition.

KCore keeps deep springs, internal sumps, marine vrulje, open collapse pits and recreational sea caverns as separate classifications.

Vrelo Une, Crveno jezero, Cetina and Gacka

Vrelo Une was pushed to -205 m in 2007 and later to -248 m by Luigi Casati. The -248 m figure is an explored depth, not proof of geological bottom.

Crveno jezero was first reached at the lake bottom by Frederic Swierczynski in May 2017 at about -245 m during low water. It is a giant flooded karst pit with open sky above, not a long continuous cave penetration.

Cetina / Veliko vrilo became a landmark connection in 2021 when DIK Freatik divers linked the spring with Gospodska Cave, producing a 4,827 m / 156 m combined system.

Majerovo vrelo is listed by HGSS at 1,020 m / -104 m and is simultaneously an exploration cave and important water source.

Adriatic vrulje and submerged paleokarst

French PlongeeSout expeditions in 2013-15 surveyed Vrulja Modrić to 2,746 m and -36 m, with roughly another 150 m explored but not mapped. Vrulja Zečica reached 1,210 m and -49 m.

These anchialine caves carry groundwater beneath the coastal mountains and can show strong fresh/marine stratification and flow changes. Submerged speleothems in Zečica and other Croatian sea-flooded caves prove former dry-cave phases during lower sea level.

Other major marine freshwater outlets include Velika Vrulja (~1.5 km / -76 m) and Vruja near Brela (-125 m current HGSS reference).

Velebit deep internal sumps - Lukina, Slovačka and Njemica

Lukina jama-Trojama reaches -1,431 m. In 1994 Zoran Stipetić “Patak” and Teo Barišić dived the terminal sump when the cave was already around -1,392 m deep. Later 2010 and 2013 expeditions extended and surveyed the phreatic continuation. Petra Kovač-Konrad and Vedran Jalžić were principal 2013 sump divers.

The terminal sump is named Patkov sifon in memory of Stipetić, who died in 1996 while testing equipment intended for further sump exploration.

Slovačka jama is -1,324 m deep; Branko Jalžić’s 2019 dive was only about 10 m long and 4 m deep — a perfect example of why underwater distance alone says little about expedition difficulty.

Njemica on Biokovo is another near-1,000 m deep cave with terminal-sump exploration; published cave-depth and underwater-depth datums must be dated and kept separate.

Marine caves and protected sea caves

Croatia’s Adriatic coastline contains many drowned caves, caverns, arches and tunnels. Galebove stijene near Pula is a representative recreational light-zone tunnel/cavern.

Biševo Blue Cave is a protected geomorphological monument, roughly 24 m long, and a 2019 study recorded 119 marine species. KCore treats it as a protected show sea cave, not a scuba objective.

Monk Seal Cave / Medvidina is about 160 m long and carries important conservation history connected with Mediterranean monk seals.

Rescue and training capability

The Croatian Mountain Rescue Service established its dedicated Underwater Cave Rescue Department in 2004. Croatia’s operational reference landscape includes deep springs, long siphons, submarine vrulje and pit sumps.

In February 2026 the Croatian CaveSAR module entered the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. HGSS also ran current cavern/sidemount training in 2026, demonstrating that underwater cave-rescue capability remains active rather than historical.
