Historical character - exploration first

Austrian cave diving developed primarily as a tool of cave exploration, hydrology and rescue. Many important dives pre-date today’s formal cave-diving curricula. Modern training is therefore presented here as the current skills-development layer, not as the origin of Austrian cave diving.

  • 15 Apr 1984 · Steinbachquelle — Two divers died during a cave dive.
  • 10–11 Oct 1987 · Pießling-Ursprung — Gabi Wiesinger disappeared during a training dive; rescue diver Stephan Lacher died during the search.
  • 4 Jan 1991 · Lamprechtshöhle — Four German explorers trapped by flood; 17-person rescue team including two divers brought them to safety.

Modern training and current skills-development layer

Current TSVÖ/CMAS cave programmes use three progressive levels and include line work, zero-visibility procedures, gas management, navigation and emergency skills. Austrian TDI/SSI/GUE-affiliated instructors and clubs also offer cave/cavern training, often combining domestic skill work with established training caves abroad.
