Existing HUD Systems

Dive HUD Systems

SCUBAPRO, Shearwater NERD and Halcyon HUD systems
Overview

Heads-up displays are already real dive equipment

AREX is new, but the idea of keeping important dive information close to the diver's eye is not. SCUBAPRO, Shearwater and Halcyon already offer established HUD-style systems for recreational, technical and rebreather diving.

The three systems approach the problem differently: SCUBAPRO mounts a complete computer to the mask, Shearwater uses a compact near-eye remote display, and Halcyon integrates its HUD into the wider Symbios ecosystem.

Existing Dive HUDs

SCUBAPRO Galileo HUD · Shearwater NERD 2 · Halcyon Symbios HUD

SCUBAPRO Galileo HUD

A complete mask-mounted hands-free dive computer using a micro-OLED near-eye display. The image appears to float in front of the diver, and the display can be flipped up when it is not needed.

Maximum operating depth120 m
BatteryUp to 20 h normal / 27 h power-save
Dive modesScuba, CCR, Freediving and Gauge
Gas capabilityNitrox and Trimix; up to 8 gases
AlgorithmZH-L16 ADT MB PMG
Air integrationWireless transmitter support
Navigation3D compass; GPS for surface navigation
Log memory2 GB / up to 10,000 h of profiles

Shearwater NERD 2

NERD means Near Eye Remote Display. It combines a small LCD with magnifying optics so the information appears much larger while the unit remains compact and close to the diver's eye.

Maximum depth300 m
BatteryRechargeable Li-ion; approx. 18 h
Display320 × 240 QVGA
WeightApprox. 74 g
ModesAir, Nitrox, 3-gas Nitrox, OC Tec Trimix, CC and Gauge
AlgorithmBühlmann with Gradient Factors
Air integrationUp to 4 transmitters
LogbookApprox. 1,000 h

Halcyon Symbios HUD

A compact HUD computer designed as part of Halcyon's connected Symbios system. It supports open-circuit and closed-circuit diving and can work with the wider Symbios wireless ecosystem.

Maximum operational depth120 m
Display320 × 240 full-color transflective TFT
BatteryRechargeable Li-ion; approx. 25 h at stated brightness
AlgorithmBühlmann ZH-L16C with Gradient Factors
Open circuitAir / Nitrox / Trimix; 5 gas settings
CCR3 diluent gas settings
NavigationTilt-compensated digital compass
Storage / connection32 GB, Bluetooth and USB

Three different ideas

The common goal is situational awareness. Galileo HUD brings a complete computer to the mask, NERD 2 places a proven technical computer display close to the eye, and Symbios HUD connects the display to a broader system of diving electronics.

For Gear Nerds Corner, they are useful reference points because they show that HUD diving is not science fiction — it is already being used in real diving, while newer systems such as AREX try to take the concept further.
